Floorplanner in the Classroom

— Jeroen @ 05:13 am

Floor plans in the classroomSince the first day we released Floorplanner.com (almost a year ago) there has been interest from students and teachers worldwide to use Floorplanner within the classroom. It is being used both for (homework) assignments as for actual classroom planning and it's being mentioned in educational resources and even podcasts. We regularly receive nice feedback like the following email we got recently:

"I used your site with my technology education class and they loved it. It was their favorite activity. Do you sell a version of this to schools? Thanks for letting us use your great product. Keep up the great work!"

We love this as we always have envisioned Floorplanner to be used for educational purposes and of course we want to stimulate this. That's why we are working on some refinements making Floorplanner even more usable in the classroom and testing a special version of our PRO account for teaching. Below you can find one of the many examples of classrooms being created with Floorplanner.

If you are using (or planning to use) Floorplanner within your classroom please let us know in the comments below. We'd love to hear how you are using our tool and how we can improve it for this specific use. Also leave a comment or contact us directly if you want to get invited to the beta program of Floorplanner for Schools that will allow teachers to collect and review all plans from their students through one account.

I've been testing it with my students and gave them the assignment to measure and draw their own house with the free version. They seemed to like it as their floorplans were more detailed then I thought they would be. I would be interested in participating in the beta.

I am using this in a high school Housing and Interior Design class I teach. First, the students created a dream room to learn how to use the program. Now for their semester project, they are doing a dream house. Great program. I love that it is internet based because they can access it and work on it from home, not just on school computers.

I have shown my students your website and they are interested in being able to use it. We do not have e-mail accounts at our school for students and students can not access their home/personal accounts from school computers. I would be interested in knowing about the beta program or the feature in Pro that would allow them to use your program. I like the feature of them being able to save to a folder that I can view what they have done. Thanks.

  5. Jeroen :

Thank you for your feedback this far. We will contact you by mail on how to participate in the beta and some tips on how to use Floorplanner within the classroom.

wonderfull software, i just dislike the 3d plan, don't look pespective view... ...everything else are great.

  8. Dave :

I used floorplanner.com in my class this year to engage students learning of area: circles, rectangles, squares, triangles and trapezoids. We quickly found out there are not that many triangles and trapezoids available. But that's ok.

It also helped with conversions. The floor plan can be set to square feet and when you click on objects it gives you inches by inches. So they had to convert to find the total area left in each room.

One thing to add might be partial lengths. Some objects are in L shapes and the dimensions only give you the total length and width of the object.

Thanks for making this an engaging and easy to use site. The 'homework' link above goes to our class site. It's a good starting point for students if you plan on using floorplanner.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for your post and tips; Most likely you have, but if you didn't: Floorplanner also lets you draw custom dimensions with the line draw tool, so you can use them for L-shapes and such.

Hi! I am planning to use your free program with my Spanish classes on Friday this week! We are currently working on learning rooms of the house and common vocabulary associated with the house (couch, television, pillows, etc.). I really like that you can switch the language to Spanish. This will be a great resource for my class. I am interested in learning more about the beta program. Please send any information that could be helpful for me to use before Friday! Thanks!

Looking forward on using this soft with my pupils.
I was also thinking about letting them make a standard room or let them finish an allready standard room (but haven't figured this out yet).
Then, when they are used to working this soft, letting them design a complete floor.
This subject is exactly what we look for during the second year ASO in Technologic Education-class in the Flemisch education.

    Thx guys!

  13. Debbie W. :

I've used Floorplanner for fourth grade math and they love it. I gave them a dollar amount to spend and per square foot prices for different rooms and then they could design as they wished. They've gone above and beyond my expectations, working at home and at school.
